Week Two: Lines, Shapes, Overlapping, Proportion

Last Friday everyone got into overlapping shapes (placing things in front of other things) to create depth of space in your drawing. We had a few new students join class--welcome! Each of you made excellent progress in your line work drawing accurate proportions. Keep working on comparing the shapes you draw to the reference picture or object you're looking at. Scroll down to view your work. Remember to click on your drawings to view them larger. :-)

Okay! Ready for a drawing challenge?...

Drawing Challenge: Aztec God Tonatiuh
For those of you who have time, here's a little challenge for you to do this week: Use lines, shapes, and tones (black and grays) to Draw the Face of the Aztec god Tonatiuh. Take time to look for the dark outlines of the shapes. Start by drawing light guidelines for the shapes, and then draw darker outlines to finish. If you have time, lightly draw the different gray tones. Draw from this reference picture: Click here

If you have any drawings you've done in your free time, give the to me and I'll post them up here on the blog.

I'll see you Friday! --Rob

Ernie

Hey, Ernie!! The control of your lines and accuracy of proportions is improving dramatically! Great job of overlapping the legs of the frog and the truck tires over the engine. This gives depth to your drawing. View the reference picture for the monster truck. Are the proportions (sizes of shapes compared to other shapes) of the truck body and tires accurate? EXCELLENT job of drawing contour lines to show the accurate form of the jaguar. You did a great job of showing the angle of its body, making it look 3D.

Week One: Lines and Shapes

I enjoyed meeting and drawing with all of you last Friday! Overall, everyone caught on quickly to holding the pencil on its side (overhand grip), and moving your whole arm and shoulder while drawing. You also got the hang of drawing light lines (guidelines) before drawing darker outlines to finish. This Friday, we'll be drawing again with lines and shapes and we'll explore overlapping. Your lessons are shown below. Be sure to click on your drawing to view it larger.

Franky

Fantastic start in drawing with lines and shapes, Franky!! You did a great job of drawing the proportions (sizes of shapes compared to other shapes) of the crab and puffer fish. I really like how you sketched light guidelines for the crab; then finished with darker outlines. I know that learning to hold your pencil on its side was difficult to get used to, but you pulled it all together to draw a really cool toucan. Compared to the reference picture you were looking at, the proportions of the toucan are very well drawn. The darker and lighter tones are a nice touch.

Joe

Alright, Joe!! You're off to a great start in drawing with lines and shapes! You have lots of control in your line work and have a god eye for looking at things; then drawing them. Compared to the reference picture you were looking at, the proportions (sizes of shapes compared to other shapes) of the crab, puffer fish, and toucan are well drawn. The gray tones for the toucan are a nice touch. Keep practicing sketching light guidelines for the shapes of things; then drawing darker outlines to finish.

Ernie

Excellent start in drawing with lines and shapes, Ernie!! Holding your pencil on its side was challenging but you gained more control with each new sketch. Also, the proportions (sizes of shapes compared to other shapes) of the crab and puffer fish became more accurate with each new sketch. And then... you pulled it all together for VERY accurate proportions of the toucan! Awesome job!!

Clarissa

You've got lots of cool drawing going on, Clarissa!! I really like how you kept drawing lines and shapes until the proportions (sizes of shapes compared to other shapes) of the crab and puffer fish became more accurate. With each new sketch you gained more control of your line work. Compared to the reference picture you were looking at, you did an EXCELLENT job of drawing accurate proportions of the toucan! Keep practicing holding your pencil on its side as you sketch light guidelines for the shapes; then darker outlines to finish.
